Our Story

Cowboys Wandering was born from a leap of faith and a whole lot of grit. After 30 years in Los Angeles, Dan and Sherri Rubendall turned their backs on city lights and followed the call of open land, settling on a stretch of dirt and dreams in Julian, California. There, they built their own ranch - bringing Sherri’s childhood back to life.

She wasn’t just raised around ranch life; she was a rodeo queen as a child, raised in the saddle with a deep love for the western way of life.

Dan, a city kid through and through, had never known ranch life until that moment. But once you trade concrete for dirt, something changes. Together, they became wandering cowboys - never always knowing where the trail would lead, just trusting the ride and living for the moment in front of them.

The Rubendall name runs deep in Big Bear Lake, California, where Dan had long dreamed of opening his own bar as the final chapter of his story. Cowboys Wandering was built from that dream and shaped by their new life as ranchers. After adopting a mustang, a racehorse, and a quarter horse, they didn’t just live the cowboy life -they earned it.

Today, Cowboys Wandering is more than a western kitchen and bar. It’s a place built on roots, risk, and real stories - a tribute to the land, the journey, and the community the Rubendalls proudly call home.
